A disastrous season for the Atlanta Braves keeps getting worse. Saturday afternoon, the Braves were defeated in a walk-off by Matt Chapman and the San Francisco Giants, extending their losing streak to six games. The Braves currently stand at 27-36, two games below .500, despite having a rough start of 0-7.
Bryce Elder had a stellar performance with 12 strikeouts in eight innings, but the offense only produced two runs. In a shocking turn of events, the Braves held a lead entering the ninth inning, yet failed to secure the win.
This loss adds to the misery of a season where the Braves previously squandered a six-run ninth-inning lead against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday. Raisel Iglesias didn’t get a save opportunity, as it fell to Pierce Johnson instead, resulting in yet another Braves loss.
Time is ticking for the Braves; analysts had projected them as a 95-win team before the season. If they maintain a similar pace, they will end the season with merely 85 wins, which could fall short of the wild-card qualifications.
Currently, the Giants, who are in a wild-card position, are footing the bill, potentially securing 92 wins. Atlanta needs to excel with a record of 65-34 in the remaining games to match that number. Although doable, it appears improbable considering the team’s struggles in offense, pitching, and defense.
Should the Braves decide to sell off players during the trade deadline, Marcell Ozuna might be their most appealing asset, albeit primarily as a rental player. Conversely, Chris Sale is likely to stick around due to his $18 million club option for 2026.
Next, the Braves aim to prevent a three-game sweep against the Giants on Sunday, with Spencer Strider (0-4, 5.68) and Landen Roupp (3-4, 3.18) set to start.
