Chicago Sky Star Courtney Vandersloot Suffers Torn ACL, Out for 2025 Season
Courtney Vandersloot's career with the Sky takes a setback as she is confirmed to have a torn ACL following her injury in the first game at the United Center.
In an unfortunate turn of events, Chicago Sky’s standout point guard, Courtney Vandersloot, sustained a serious knee injury just minutes into the team’s first game at the United Center, resulting in a 79-52 loss to the Indiana Fever on Saturday. Following an MRI, it was confirmed that she has a torn ACL and will be sidelined for the remainder of the 2025 WNBA season.
After the game, Sky coach Tyler Marsh shared his thoughts on Vandersloot’s importance to the team, noting that she is the team’s “engine, captain, and leader.”
“It’s a huge blow. Hopefully, it’s not as serious as we may think. For now, we must pick each other up,” he expressed.
Vandersloot has had an illustrious career with the Sky since being drafted No. 3 overall in the 2011 WNBA Draft. She is the franchise’s all-time leader in several statistical categories, having helped lead the Sky to their first championship in 2021.
In a similar vein, Austin Kelly, acting head coach of the Fever, also regards Vandersloot with immense respect and expressed his sentiments towards her recovery:
“We never want to see that happen to any player.”
With Vandersloot out, Kamilla Cardoso and Angel Reese will be stepping up, while Hailey Van Lith, the No. 11 overall pick from the 2025 WNBA Draft, took her place in the starting lineup during the second half on Saturday and is likely to continue in that role.
Vandersloot’s injury marks a significant loss for the Sky as they navigate their rebuilding phase this season.
