Former Louisville basketball star Russ Smith arrested for DUI and reckless driving
Russ Smith, a guard known for his role in Louisville's 2013 championship team, was arrested in Louisville this weekend for DUI and reckless driving.
Former Louisville basketball player Russ Smith, pivotal in the Cardinals’ 2013 national championship team—which was later vacated by the NCAA—was arrested early Sunday in Louisville for DUI, as reported by the Courier Journal.
Smith reportedly made a U-turn that crossed several lanes and a pedestrian crosswalk in Louisville’s Highlands neighborhood. Law enforcement indicated that his vehicle bore a license plate that had expired in 2022. He showed signs of intoxication, admitting to having consumed “two bourbon pours neat” prior to getting behind the wheel.
Despite his blood alcohol content registering at 0.073—below Kentucky’s legal limit of 0.08—state law permits DUI charges for drivers with a BAC between 0.04 and 0.08 if there is credible evidence of impairment present. Smith was also cited for reckless driving due to his U-turn and the expired plate, and he was released without bond pending arraignment on Wednesday in Jefferson District Court.
Smith, a standout at Louisville from 2010 to 2014, helped propel the Cardinals to two consecutive Final Fours and secured a national title in 2013. He concluded his college career as the top scorer for his final two seasons, amassing over 1,900 points while averaging 14.3 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 2.8 assists across 133 games. He earned consensus first-team All-America honors in 2014.
The Philadelphia 76ers drafted Smith in the second round of the 2014 NBA Draft, transferring his rights to the New Orleans Pelicans. He appeared in only six games before being traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in January 2015, totaling 21 games across two seasons, with much of his professional career occurring overseas and in the NBA G League.
