Mutual Interest: Knicks and Mavericks' Jason Kidd Explore Coaching Prospects

The New York Knicks are reportedly interested in Dallas Mavericks' coach Jason Kidd, with potential mutual intrigue as they search for a new coach.

The New York Knicks are reportedly expressing interest in Dallas Mavericks coach Jason Kidd during their search for a new coach. According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, there is substantial interest from both parties.

“There is mutual intrigue on both sides,” Windhorst mentioned on Sportscenter.

While Kidd had significant career moments with the Mavericks, his journey ended in New York. Following the firing of Tom Thibodeau after the Knicks reached the Eastern Conference finals, the organization seeks a coach who can elevate them to an NBA championship.

The decisive factor is whether the Mavericks will grant permission for the Knicks to discuss opportunities with their coach, especially since Kidd recently signed a contract extension in May of last year.

Windhorst outlined three possible actions the Mavericks might take if the Knicks request to speak to Kidd: deny permission, enhance Kidd’s contract, or trade him to New York, marking a potentially historic move in coaching trades.

Windhorst emphasized, “We have seen a handful of trades of coaches over the last 15-18 years, including Jason Kidd being traded from the Brooklyn Nets to the Milwaukee Bucks for two second-round picks 11 years ago.”

Further reports from NBA insider Marc Stein indicate that the Mavericks may lean toward denying the Knicks’ request to communicate with Kidd.

In his tenure with Dallas, Kidd achieved a 179-149 record and notably led the team to the 2024 NBA Finals amid a tumultuous season involving notable player trades.
