When Scottie Scheffler stood on the 18th green at Augusta National, he assisted Rory McIlroy in donning his first green jacket during the 2025 Masters. This seemingly indicated that McIlroy had genuinely closed the gap with Scheffler at the pinnacle of the golf hierarchy, with Bryson DeChambeau closely following. McIlroy’s triumph at the Masters marked his third win of the PGA Tour season, while Scheffler had not yet claimed a victory. DeChambeau, in the meantime, had secured a major title more recently than Scheffler at the 2024 U.S. Open, marking a significant phase in his career.
Following Scheffler’s commanding win at the PGA, securing his third major title, and another victory at the Memorial two weeks prior, he has begun to distinctly separate himself from McIlroy and DeChambeau, dominating the latest odds. Currently, Scheffler leads the 2025 U.S. Open odds at Oakmont with a remarkable 11/4, according to BetMGM, establishing him as the clear-cut favorite— a status not seen since Tiger Woods held odds of 7/4 at the 2009 PGA Championship.
This pre-tournament price is quite remarkable, especially given DeChambeau’s solid performance in majors over the past two years, finishing in the top six in five of his last six major tournaments, including a win and two runner-up finishes.
In contrast, McIlroy seems to have fallen behind at odds of 11-1, now tied for third with Jon Rahm at 12-1 after a notably poor showing at the RBC Canadian Open.
While Scheffler typically downplays comparisons to Woods, he’s consistently found himself among the elite of the sport. Although it seemed unlikely that any golfer could create such a gap in this competitive era of golf, Scheffler has managed to place himself in a class of his own.
