DeMarcus Cousins Faces Season Suspension Following Fan Altercations
DeMarcus Cousins has been suspended for the remainder of the season in Puerto Rico's basketball league after physical confrontations with fans.
Former NBA All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins has been suspended for the remainder of the season in Puerto Rico’s basketball league after a near-brawl with fans during a game on Monday. His team, the Guaynabo Mets, also terminated his contract.
The 34-year-old Cousins, who played for seven teams throughout his NBA career, made an obscene gesture, exchanged words, and repeatedly grabbed the arm of a courtside fan before being subdued by his teammates.
Cousins was issued a second technical foul for his conduct and subsequently ejected from the game. While leaving for the locker room, he engaged in an argument with another fan, during which attendees threw liquids at him. He attempted to re-engage with fans after his ejection but was restrained and escorted out.
Cousins incurred a $4,250 fine and could face an additional penalty of $5,750, as announced by the Baloncesto Superior Nacional league.
“As an organization, we strongly condemn any form of violence or provocation, whether on or off the field. Safety, respect, and sportsmanship are non-negotiable values for this franchise,” said the Mets in a news release.
This was Cousins’ second season playing in Puerto Rico. He was averaging 18.2 points and nine rebounds for a team that has a 9-18 record. During his previous tenure with the Mets in the 2023 season, Cousins helped the team reach the semifinals.
Throughout his NBA career, Cousins averaged 19.6 points and 10.2 rebounds over 11 seasons, with his peak performance occurring in the 2016-2017 season with Sacramento, when he averaged 27.8 points.
After his stint in the NBA, Cousins also played in the Taiwan and Mongolia basketball leagues before returning to the Mets in May.
