Pacers Face Thunder in Crucial Game 3: What to Expect

Indiana Pacers prepare for a must-win Game 3 against the Oklahoma City Thunder after fluctuating performance in the NBA Finals.

The Pacers managed a surprise victory in Game 1 of the NBA Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder but suffered a heavy defeat in Game 2.

As the series shifts back to Indiana, the Pacers have the opportunity to take a 2-1 lead, although the Thunder have shown strong control throughout the playoffs.

The Pacers have not suffered back-to-back defeats since early March, yet they have only held a lead for a total of under two minutes in this series.

Will they find a way to clinch a critical victory in Game 3?

While I correctly predicted the Pacers’ performance against the Cavaliers, I underestimated their ability in the series against the Knicks. Initially, I was skeptical of their long-range shooting prowess, given their strong season record (ranked ninth in 3-point shooting).

They remarkably shot 17-for-33 from three-point range to oust the Knicks in Game 6.

Against the Thunder, they are currently maintaining a 40% shooting rate from 3-point territory. If this form persists, they can stay competitive in the series.

The first two games have highlighted the importance of bench contributions from 3-point shooters. Obi Toppin started strong with a 5-for-8 performance on threes in Game 1 but lowered his accuracy to 1-for-5 in Game 2.

Meanwhile, the Thunder’s reserves have stepped up with effective shooting: Alex Caruso went 4-for-8, while Aaron Wiggins shot 5-for-8.

Which supporting players will rise to the occasion in Game 3?

Traditionally, role players tend to thrive at home but may falter when away. Possible candidates for Indiana could include Thomas Bryant (who impressively connected on three shots against NYK), Ben Sheppard, and Ben Mathurin.

Given that key Thunder players, Jalen Williams (33% FG, 22% 3FG) and Chet Holmgren (40% FG, 25% 3FG), have faced challenges, it could set the stage for a favorable outcome for the Pacers.

Remember, during the first round, the Thunder struggled after trailing by 26 against Memphis in Game 3 before Ja Morant’s injury and were down 31 against the Wolves in the Western finals’ Game 3, even though they previously led the series 2-0.

To have any falter in the finals, the Pacers must secure a win on Wednesday.
