Denny Hamlin to Miss NASCAR's Mexico City Race After Welcoming His Son
Denny Hamlin announces he will skip a NASCAR race to support his family after the birth of his son.
Denny Hamlin has announced that he will be skipping this weekend’s NASCAR Cup Series race in Mexico City as he intends to support his fiancée, Jordan, following their son’s birth on June 11. Hamlin has had a successful season with three wins, the latest at Michigan just last week.
Ryan Truex, the younger brother of former Cup champion Martin Truex Jr. and the reserve driver for Joe Gibbs Racing, will take over Hamlin’s No. 11 Toyota this weekend at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. The team is also seeking a waiver from NASCAR to keep their playoff eligibility, as NASCAR allows drivers to apply for waivers under certain personal circumstances, including the birth of a child.
“We are thrilled to announce the arrival of our son. Everyone is doing well,” Hamlin stated. “My top priority right now is to be at home with Jordan and our family during this transition.”
Hamlin had previously discussed the complications of traveling to Mexico shortly before his son’s birth, indicating that it would have been a challenge to manage the travel logistics.
“It’s one thing when you’re in Michigan, just an hour-and-a-half flight away without customs. In Mexico, it’s more complicated,” Hamlin explained. “I can’t leave until the baby arrives.”
This upcoming race will mark the first that Hamlin has missed since March 2014, ending a remarkable streak of 406 consecutive starts. Truex, driving in Hamlin’s place, last competed in a Cup race back in 2014.
Currently, Hamlin ranks third in the Cup Series standings with three wins this season and is rapidly moving up NASCAR’s all-time wins list, now sitting at 57 career wins.
