Orioles icon Cal Ripken Jr. and Ravens head coach John Harbaugh were attending an Orioles game together, seated in the front row behind home plate. During the game, a foul ball landed between them, narrowly missing both. As the ball bounced into the stands, Jim Harbaugh didn’t miss the chance to joke about the situation with his brother.
“I wasn’t going to talk about it,” Jim Harbaugh said after his media availability at the Los Angeles Chargers minicamp. “That literally was a can of corn. That would be the lesson: keep your eye on the ball. But far be it from me to coach Cal Ripken, a great shortstop.”
John Harbaugh leaned forward while Ripken moved to the side, both dodging the ball as Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman rushed towards the netting, ultimately unable to make the catch. Jim noted that his brother was a “tremendous middle infielder” but had left his glove behind. Neither observed the fouled ball that could have been caught if they had aimed to grab it.
Cal Ripken Jr. is celebrated as one of the greatest players in Orioles history, notable for winning many major awards throughout his long career, including two AL MVPs and the 1983 World Series. Similarly, John Harbaugh has significant accomplishments to his name, having led the Ravens to victory in Super Bowl XLVII and holding the record as the most successful coach in the team’s history with 185 wins.
