Christian Pulisic Critiques Landon Donovan's Comments on Commitment to USMNT

Christian Pulisic defends his decision to skip the Gold Cup and critiques Landon Donovan's remarks, emphasizing the need for rest ahead of the World Cup.

U.S. men’s national team attacker Christian Pulisic criticized former players who questioned his commitment to the team after he opted to skip the Concacaf Gold Cup. This decision has drawn scrutiny, particularly in light of comments from retired star Landon Donovan, who implied that players missing from the Gold Cup roster were choosing to take a ‘vacation’ rather than compete for the national team.

Pulisic highlighted that U.S. Soccer previously stated the decision to rest was made in preparation for the World Cup in 2026, emphasizing that he had played over 100 games in the last two years. He appeared on CBS Sports Golazo Network’s Call It What You Want to clarify his stance and address the criticism he has faced.

“I try to stay away from it as much as I can,” Pulisic remarked, adding that remarks from esteemed players like Donovan are hard to overlook.

He expressed confusion over the comments received from Donovan, mentioning the idolization he felt as a child and how it impacts him when such remarks are made publicly in contrast to the private support he receives from them.

Pulisic argued that judging a player’s commitment is inappropriate, especially pointing out that he has consistently shown dedication to the national team, only missing games due to injury.

He referenced the crucial need for personal health, citing fatigue towards the season’s end as a reason for his decision, stating, “I started to think what is going to be best for me leading into next year going into the World Cup.”

Pulisic acknowledged that the discourse surrounding his decision had created unnecessary tension within the USMNT, clearly indicating his desire for unity rather than division among fans and players.

In recent statements, he maintained that although he is taking a break for his physical health, he remains a fervent supporter of the team, always tuning in and hoping for positive outcomes.

Ultimately, Pulisic underlined that the narrative suggesting players don’t care is misleading and that he, along with his teammates, is committed to putting their best effort forward.
