Canada soccer coach Jesse Marsch appeared to direct a jab at the USMNT’s roster during a Thursday press conference ahead of the Concacaf Gold Cup. His comments were spurred by Christian Pulisic’s decision to sit out this tournament, citing the need for rest and dissatisfaction with ongoing criticism.
Marsch made it clear that his players are eager to participate and have no intentions of opting out, saying:
“This is the internal pressure we put on each other, there’s no time off. Not one guy called me and said, ‘Coach, I don’t know, it’s been a long year, maybe I don’t come to the Gold Cup.’ Not one guy. Not even close to that conversation.”
This comes in the context of discussions around Pulisic’s commitment to the national team, as he faced backlash for skipping the Gold Cup.
The Canadian team is gearing up for this Gold Cup with ambitions of claiming their first title in that competition since 2000, a goal that Marsch’s squad takes seriously as they prepare to face Honduras in their opener.
