Mya Lesnar, representing Colorado State, has etched her name in the history books by securing the Division I shot put title at the 2025 NCAA Championships. This victory is notable as it marks the Rams’ first outdoor national championship in twenty years, a feat accomplished previously by Loree Smith in 2005 in the hammer throw.
Lesnar showcased an impressive performance, achieving a top throw of 62 feet, 4½ inches to clinch her win. Competitors are allowed three attempts, but Lesnar set a strong precedent early on with an initial throw exceeding 60 feet, giving her a lead over the competition.
Illinois athlete Abria Smith finished in second place, with a throw of 61 feet, 10¼ inches. However, Lesnar’s second throw measured 61 feet, 11 inches, sufficient for a significant victory.

Lesnar previously attended Arizona State for her initial two collegiate seasons before transferring to Colorado State, where she made a splash by winning the weight throw at the Mountain West Indoor Championships in 2023, achieving a personal best of 20.68 meters. Since her arrival, she has honed her skills, establishing herself as one of the top shot putters nationally.
Entering the NCAA Championships ranked number one, this triumph is a continuation of her success. In 2024, she secured the indoor national title for shot put and even competed in the 2024 Paris Olympics, finishing sixth overall with a throw of 62 feet, 4½ inches. Remarkably, her personal best of 64 feet, 3¾ inches in 2025 would have earned her a medal in the 2024 Olympics.
