Max Fried's Evolving Game: Insights from His First Season with the Yankees

Max Fried has adapted his pitching strategy in the Yankees, showcasing impressive performances despite team challenges.

New York —

Max Fried has consistently demonstrated precision on the mound during his tenure with the Yankees. Following the loss of Gerrit Cole due to Tommy John surgery, the Yankees faced a significant challenge, especially after also losing Luis Gil to a lat strain earlier this season.

Despite these setbacks, the Yankees hold a 42-25 record, currently leading the American League East, just behind the Tigers. Pitcher Carlos Rodón has been instrumental in supporting the lineup, while Fried is establishing himself as a contender for the Cy Young award, with an impressive 1.84 ERA over 14 starts.

Fried’s evolution as a pitcher is notable. Historically reliant on his fastball, now utilized nearly 40% of the time, he has adapted his pitching style significantly over the years. Aaron Judge commented on Fried’s fastball saying, “It makes it tough in the league, especially now that [pitchers are] creating new pitches every single year.”

As Fried rotates his pitches effectively, hitters are struggling against his fastball, recording a mere .149 batting average against it.
