Colts Coach Praises Daniel Jones During Quarterback Competition

With Anthony Richardson recovering from a shoulder injury, Daniel Jones is impressing the Colts coaching staff with his skills during training.

The Indianapolis Colts are gearing up for an intriguing quarterback competition during the preseason. Currently, one promising quarterback is sidelined with an injury while another is making a strong impression on the coaching staff. Anthony Richardson is dealing with a shoulder injury that kept him from participating in minicamp, and there’s no set timetable for his return. On the other hand, free-agent addition Daniel Jones is garnering praise from Coach Shane Steichen.

“Very pleased with what we got right now,” Steichen remarked about Jones. “He’s been doing a helluva job. Really smart football player. Learned the offense very quickly, making really good decisions out there through OTAs. Obviously, we want to carry that over to training camp, but he’s done a really good job. Great command in the huddle. Ultimate pro.”

Jones might find renewed success in a more stable environment, having previously played for the New York Giants, where he signed a four-year, $160 million contract extension in 2023 after enjoying a career year.

Offensive Coordinator Jim Bob Cooter expressed that the team had conducted thorough background research on Jones before signing him.

“We did our due diligence, calling around background-type stuff,” Cooter stated. “With any player we bring in here, we try to do the background and make sure we know sort of what kind of guy we’re bringing in, what his work habits are like, preparation, leadership, communication, teamwork. He’s been as advertised, with the work habits and preparation… We’ll come back in training camp and we’ll learn a ton about him … that’ll be a really, really fun process.”

Given Richardson’s injury status, it’s fair to consider Jones as the early favorite in this quarterback competition.
