Inter's Mehdi Taremi Stuck in Iran Due to Conflict, Misses Club World Cup Opener

Mehdi Taremi is unable to leave Iran amidst rising tensions and will miss the first match of the Club World Cup.

Inter forward Mehdi Taremi is unable to fly to the United States for the Club World Cup this week because of the escalating conflict in the Middle East, according to the Associated Press. Taremi remains in Tehran after flights out of Iran were stopped following military exchanges between Iran and Israel.

The 32-year-old striker was supposed to leave on Saturday to join his club in Los Angeles.

Taremi is set to miss Inter’s first match of the Club World Cup against Monterrey on Wednesday, and reports from Italian media indicate he might not play at all in the tournament, even if restrictions are lifted.

The Iranian international joined Inter from FC Porto last year and contributed to the club’s 2024 Serie A campaign, making seven starts and 19 appearances off the bench, scoring once in league play as Inter finished second in the standings.

Taremi also participated in 12 Champions League matches last season but was an unused substitute during Inter’s 5-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the final. Just days before the Club World Cup, Taremi scored in Iran’s 3-0 World Cup qualifying victory against North Korea on Tuesday.
