Kobe Bryant's Unforgettable Moment: Celebrating 25 Years Since Lakers' Epic Game 4 Win Over Pacers
Reflecting on June 14, 2000, when Kobe Bryant shone in a crucial NBA Finals victory.
Kobe Bryant had numerous unforgettable moments during his 20-year NBA career, ranging from his spectacular All-Star Game debut in 1998 to scoring 81 points in a single game in 2006 and his remarkable 60 points in his last game. One standout event was his iconic lob to Shaquille O’Neal, which capped a thrilling comeback victory over the Trailblazers in Game 7 of the 2000 Western Conference Finals. However, O’Neal recalls another moment as his favorite.
“My favorite Kobe moment is in the Finals in Indiana,” O’Neal expressed in a past interview. “You put your hand on my shoulder and said, ‘Don’t worry, big fella. I got it. You took over.’”
(Translation: “I got it; you don’t need to worry, I will handle it.”)
O’Neal referenced Game 4 of the 2000 NBA Finals on June 14, 2025. The Lakers had achieved the Finals for the first time since 1991 and entered the game with a series lead against the veteran Pacers led by Reggie Miller.
The series showcased elite play from O’Neal, scoring 43 and 40 points in the first two games, respectively, leading to the Lakers’ victories. The Pacers struck back, claiming Game 3 and its first Finals win. In Game 4, however, tensions simmered as the lead changed hands repeatedly.
After a back-and-forth struggle, the game went into overtime. With just under 40 seconds remaining, the Lakers led by one point when O’Neal was disqualified after six fouls, pressuring Bryant to step up. He delivered, scoring key shots and securing a crucial rebound that led to a Lakers victory.
Bryant finished the game with 28 points, assisting in the Lakers’ momentous 120-117 win.
“Always knew you were a bad cat,” O’Neal remarked later about Bryant, “but that moment right there… you showed no fear.”
(Translation: “I always recognized your talent; you were fierce, but in that moment, your courageousness shone through.”)
Kobe’s performance in Game 4 symbolized a pivotal turn in his career, demonstrating his transition from a promising talent to a full-fledged NBA star.
His journey from years of disappointment through previous playoff failures culminated during that game, affirming his legacy as one of basketball’s best.
