Anthony Edwards Responds to Luka Doncic Trade: 'There's More to Discover'
Anthony Edwards shares his astonishment over the Luka Doncic trade and questions the reasons behind it, highlighting the significance of the move.
At this point, Mavericks general manager/chaotic agent Nico Harrison might be the only person who doesn’t believe trading Luka Doncic to the Lakers was one of the most baffling decisions in NBA history.
From the start, it seemed like there had to be more to the story than merely Harrison preferring a 32-year-old injury-prone Anthony Davis to a 25-year-old generational talent. Doncic must have demanded the trade; how else could this be explained?
Count Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards among those utterly amazed by the trade.
“They say nobody knew about the trade. That’s crazy,” Edwards said while at his locker following the Wolves’ two-point loss to Sacramento on Monday. “At 25 [years old], they traded probably the best scorer in the NBA. And he didn’t know about it. There’s a lot more digging to do to understand why he got traded. You don’t just trade him at 25. He just went to the Finals. I feel bad for Luka, man.”
As details continue to emerge about the trade, it seems that Harrison, incredibly, genuinely wanted out of the Doncic business altogether. He didn’t even shop Doncic around and seemed content with an exceptionally weak return package. How did Rob Pelinka manage to get him to settle for just one future draft pick?
Even if it can be argued that the Mavericks are still in a decent position to compete in the short term with Davis, no one can comprehend the reasoning behind giving away another decade with one of the greatest players we’ve ever seen. His connection with Dallas has left a gaping hole that winning a championship cannot fill.
When asked if Doncic’s trade puts even a player like him on alert, Edwards made a light-hearted comment to Minnesota president of basketball operations Tim Connelly: “Everybody get informed. I’m scared. Tim, if you’re going to trade me, let me know, dawg. When Luka got traded, anyone could be traded.”
Edwards clearly voices the thoughts of many. While more details emerge suggesting that Harrison was on a solo mission to trade Doncic, it feels like there has to be more behind this story, otherwise, the Mavericks are making a risky bet.
