Lakers' $10 Billion Sale Breaks Records in U.S. Sports History

The Los Angeles Lakers have set a new high mark for team sales in North America, achieving a staggering $10 billion in valuation during their recent sale.

The largest sale in NBA and North American sports history occurred Wednesday when Mark Walter, the owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, entered an agreement to acquire the majority ownership of the Los Angeles Lakers from the Buss family for a reported valuation of approximately $10 billion.

This sale sets a new record for franchise sales in North America, surpassing the previous maximum held by the Boston Celtics, who were sold for $6.1 billion in March. The Buss family has held ownership since 1979, when Dr. Jerry Buss purchased the franchise from Jack Kent Cooke. Following the sale, Jeanie Buss will continue her role as governor of the Lakers.

Noteworthy Sales in North American Sports:

  1. Los Angeles Lakers (2025): $10 billion

    • Walter holds a significant stake in the Lakers after today’s transaction.
  2. Boston Celtics (2025): $6.1 billion

    • The franchise saw a substantial increase in its market value recently.
  3. Washington Commanders (2023): $6.05 billion

    • Purchased by Josh Harris from Dan Snyder.
  4. Denver Broncos (2022): $4.65 billion

    • Sold to the Walton-Penner family post-Pat Bowlen’s death.
  5. Phoenix Suns and Mercury (2023): $4 billion

    • Acquired by Mat Ishbia in a package deal.

This increasing trend in team sales underscores the rising value of major sports franchises.
