The summer of soccer is taking a new look this year with the FIFA Club World Cup, marking its first edition in the United States with an expanded competition featuring 32 teams and a whopping $1 billion prize pool.
High-profile squads like UEFA Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain and Argentine giants Boca Juniors are joining the fray, each aiming for significant achievements. European teams comprise the majority, with 12 representatives, followed by six from South America. Four squads from Asia and Africa will also participate, alongside five from North America, including three MLS teams. One team from Oceania, Auckland City, has also earned its spot.
As the tournament commenced, Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami and Simone Inzaghi’s Al-Hilal are considered underdogs amidst a field largely dominated by European squads. Teams like Real Madrid, Manchester City, and others are under pressure to perform and overcome the disappointment of recent trophyless seasons.
With that in mind, here’s a look at the Club World Cup schedule and results.
