Red Sox Demote Top Prospect Kristian Campbell After Struggles Despite Major Contract
Boston Red Sox infielder Kristian Campbell has been sent down to Triple-A following disappointing performance this season.
The Boston Red Sox have decided to send infielder Kristian Campbell back to the minors. The 23-year-old rookie, who was part of the Opening Day roster and signed an eight-year, $60 million contract during spring training, is being demoted to Triple-A due to his underwhelming performance this season, as reported by ESPN.
Entereing the season, Campbell was considered one of the most promising players in baseball, ranked third overall by CBS Sports. He was drafted in 2023 from Georgia Tech and quickly progressed through the Red Sox’s minor leagues, playing only 56 games in Double-A and 19 in Triple-A before making the big league roster this year.
However, his performance has not met expectations. Over 67 games this season, he has managed a batting line of .223/.319/.345, with 10 doubles, six home runs, 21 RBIs, 24 runs scored, and two stolen bases. Recently, his hitting has stalled, as he went just 2 for 18 in his last eight games. In total, Campbell has played 54 games at second base and eight in the outfield, with a recent attempt to learn first base that did not lead to any starts.
The Red Sox infield has seen significant changes this season, particularly with Triston Casas suffering an injury at first base, Rafael Devers being hesitant to play there, and Alex Bregman’s injury. Abraham Toro has stepped in at first base, backed by Marcelo Mayer at third base while they await Bregman’s return. It seems like David Hamilton and Romy Gonzalez will handle second base duties moving forward, especially with Wilyer Abreu expected back soon from an injury.
Assuming Campbell can regain his form at Triple-A, he might still play a crucial role in taking over second base in the second half of the season.
