Kevin Durant's Investment in Paris Saint-Germain: A Leap into Basketball Strategy
Kevin Durant becomes an investor in PSG, aiming to guide the club's multi-sport strategy, including basketball expansion.
Two-time NBA champion Kevin Durant has become an investor in UEFA Champions League team Paris Saint-Germain and will serve as a consultant on the club’s potential plans to expand into basketball, according to The Athletic. Durant’s investment comes via the expansion of his existing partnership with Qatar Sports Investments (QSI), which aims to establish a basketball team in Paris, aligning with the NBA’s exploration of expansion into Europe.
Durant had previously invested a single-digit million shareholding in Paris Saint-Germain through his firm Boardroom. However, private equity firm Arctos subsequently acquired a 12.5% stake in the team in December 2023, from which Durant has now exited, transitioning to a direct minority stake of similar size as his former investment. As Durant’s exit is compensated in other ways from the fund, Arctos maintains its 12.5% stake intact.
In the partnership with Boardroom and QSI—including commercial, investment, and media initiatives—Durant will assist PSG in their multi-sport strategy, which “includes potential plans in basketball.” Currently, PSG’s sports portfolio includes men’s and women’s soccer, youth soccer, handball, and judo.
“It is an honour to partner with QSI and be a shareholder in Paris Saint-Germain—a club and a city that is so close to my heart,” Durant stated. “This club has big plans ahead, and I can’t wait to be part of the next phase of growth and to explore new investment opportunities with QSI.”
The Athletic reported in March that NBA commissioner Adam Silver intends to propose to the league’s Board of Governors the framework for NBA expansion into Europe, which might encompass teams in cities like London and Paris. This prospective European league could collaborate with the EuroLeague, which notably already has a team in Paris.
