Kevin Durant Joins Paris Saint-Germain as Investor and Consultant for Basketball Expansion

Two-time NBA champion Kevin Durant has invested in Paris Saint-Germain and will guide the club on its exploration into basketball.

Two-time NBA champion Kevin Durant has become an investor in UEFA Champions League team Paris Saint-Germain and will serve as a consultant on the club’s potential plans to expand into basketball, according to The Athletic. Durant’s investment in Paris Saint-Germain comes via the expansion of Durant’s existing partnership with Qatar Sports Investments (QSI), which has expressed interest in launching a basketball team in Paris, coinciding with the NBA’s exploration of expansion to Europe.

Durant previously made a single-digit million investment in Paris Saint-Germain through his investment firm Boardroom. A private equity firm named Arctos acquired a 12.5% stake in the team in December 2023, from which Durant has now exited to establish a direct minority stake roughly equivalent to his old investment. Durant’s exit from the stake obtained through Arctos was organized through other financial means, retaining Arctos’s stake percentage.

Additionally, as part of the partnership between Boardroom and QSI (encompassing commercial, investment, and media content initiatives), Durant will also advise PSG on their multi-sport strategy, including potential expansion into basketball. Currently, Paris Saint-Germain’s sports portfolio includes men’s and women’s soccer, youth soccer, handball, and judo.

“It is an honor to partner with QSI and be a shareholder in Paris Saint-Germain – a club and a city that is so close to my heart,” Durant expressed. “This club has big plans ahead, and I can’t wait to be a part of the next phase of growth and to explore new investment opportunities with QSI.”

Furthermore, The Athletic reported that NBA commissioner Adam Silver intends to present an outline for NBA expansion into Europe to the league’s Board of Governors. This prospective league could feature teams in cities like London and Paris and might involve a collaboration with the EuroLeague, which already includes a basketball team from Paris.
