Major League Baseball has imposed penalties following a heated encounter between the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres. Both team managers, Dave Roberts from the Dodgers and Mike Shildt from the Padres, have received a one-game suspension. In addition, Padres reliever Robert Suarez has been banned for three games after hitting Shohei Ohtani. All three were ejected from the game on Thursday and were subjected to undisclosed fines.
The suspensions will take effect on Friday, although Suarez has chosen to appeal, delaying the implementation of his punishment until a hearing is arranged.
During the matchup, Fernando Tatis Jr. exited after being struck in the hand by a fastball from reliever Jack Little, leading to inconclusive X-rays due to the impact, which represented his third hit by pitch against the Dodgers this season.
“Whether it was [intentional] or not, enough is enough,” Shildt remarked after the incident. “We got a guy who’s getting X-rays right now, is one of the best players in the game; fortunately, he’s on our team, and this guy has taken shots, okay?”
The bench’s reactions were intense, explaining why Suarez targeted Ohtani during the ninth inning.
Shohei Ohtani plays peacemaker at the end of another wild game between the Padres and Dodgers.
The Padres triumphed with a score of 5-3, cutting their National League West deficit down to five games. Notably, throughout their seven encounters this year, 10 players have been hit, including eight in the last four games. The Dodgers currently lead the annual series 5-2. Their next meeting will not happen until August 15-17 in Los Angeles, providing ample time for reconciliations.
