Coastal Carolina Coaches Dismissed in Opening Inning of College World Series Game 2

Two coaches from Coastal Carolina were ejected and given suspensions during the first inning of Game 2 of the Men's College World Series.

Coastal Carolina faced a significant setback when both their head coach, Kevin Schnall, and first base coach, Matt Schilling, were thrown out of the game during the first inning of Game 2 in the Men’s College World Series. The incident began when Schnall voiced his objections to calls made by the home plate umpire, Angel Campos. Following prolonged disputes, Schnall was ejected and subsequently handed a two-game suspension, which means he would be absent for a potential Game 3 if the Chanticleers win on Sunday.

According to NCAA regulations, any argument regarding balls, strikes, or similar matters leads to ejection if the parties do not heed an initial warning. Despite receiving a warning, Schnall continued to dispute calls which resulted in his ousting. Schilling was also dismissed for making further remarks during the dispute and received an automatic one-game suspension, thereby also missing Game 3.

The NCAA stated, “In the bottom of the first inning, Coastal Carolina head coach Kevin Schnall and first base coach Matt Schilling were ejected from the game for continued arguing about balls and strikes after being warned initially by the umpire crew.”

With Schnall’s suspension, Associate Head Coach Chad Oxendine takes over coaching duties for the remainder of the series, alongside Tyler Shewmaker, who will act as first base coach.

The team quickly shook off the earlier chaos in the next inning. Following a strong performance from pitcher Jacob Morrison, the Chanticleers scored their first run of the series with a solo home run by Dean Mihos.
