Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Claims NBA Finals MVP, Echoes Legends of the Game

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander capped an astonishing season by winning the NBA Finals MVP and leading the Oklahoma City Thunder to their first championship victory.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the star player for the Oklahoma City Thunder, concluded an exceptional individual season by clinching the Finals MVP award while leading his team to victory against the Indiana Pacers in Game 7 of the NBA Finals on Sunday night.

In this decisive match, Gilgeous-Alexander scored 29 points, delivered 12 assists, and collected five rebounds, helping the Thunder triumph with a score of 103-91. This accomplishment made him the first player since Shaquille O’Neal in 2000 to secure the scoring title, regular season MVP, and Finals MVP all in the same season. Previously, only Michael Jordan and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had achieved this feat.

Moreover, he became the first player to win both the regular season MVP and Finals MVP in the same year since LeBron James in 2013.

Gilgeous-Alexander’s remarkable performance placed him among an elite group in NBA Finals history, becoming the third player ever to achieve at least 25 points and 12 assists in a Game 7, a rare achievement shared with legends such as Walt Frazier and Jerry West. He also became the first player since Magic Johnson in 1988 to record 12 assists in a Finals Game 7.

Notably, his best performance in the series occurred during Game 1, where he scored 38 points despite the Thunder’s narrow loss.

In addition to his MVP accolades, Gilgeous-Alexander continued to solidify his status, becoming a consensus All-NBA player for the third consecutive season and receiving the Magic Johnson Award for the MVP of the Western Conference Finals.
