Thunder Secures NBA Championship, But Long Wait for Others Continues
The Oklahoma City Thunder triumph in the 2024-2025 NBA Finals, leaving other teams still chasing their championship dreams.
The Oklahoma City Thunder have clinched the 2024-2025 NBA championship after an intense series against the Indiana Pacers, which went the full seven games.
This title marks the end of a 46-year wait since their previous championship win as the Seattle SuperSonics in 1979. Meanwhile, the Pacers are left with a 49-year championship drought, despite their three ABA titles from the early 1970s, as they are still in search of the prestigious Larry O’Brien Trophy.
Although the Thunder have lifted the trophy, the Pacers will now carry on their search for the ultimate basketball prize, adding another year without a championship to their record. Their lack of success in the NBA ranks as the seventh-longest title drought, matching the Brooklyn Nets, who joined the league in 1976.
Here are six franchises that are also still in pursuit of their first NBA title:
Utah Jazz: 51 years
The Utah Jazz have been without a title since joining the NBA in 1974, despite strong showings in the late ’90s led by legends like Karl Malone and John Stockton.
New York Knicks: 52 years
The Knicks, last crowned champions in 1973, have come close but have fallen short in recent decades, with their most notable near-win in 1994.
Los Angeles Clippers: 55 years
Having never secured a championship, the Clippers are a storied franchise with a history of missed opportunities since their founding in 1970.
Phoenix Suns: 57 years
Since their inception in 1968, the Suns have reached the Finals three times but have yet to claim the trophy, most recently losing to the Bucks in 2021.
Atlanta Hawks: 67 years
The Hawks, formerly the St. Louis Hawks, last lifted the trophy in 1958 and have had a long drought ever since.
Sacramento Kings: 74 years
The Kings won their only championship in 1951, which predates the NBA’s merger with the ABA, and have not returned to the Finals since.
This championship season for the Thunder marks a momentous occasion, while emphasizing the continuing journey for those still in search of their first title.
