Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes shares his feelings regarding the Dallas Mavericks’ recent trade of Luka Doncic.

Mahomes expressed his disappointment, stating, “It’s tough. You know, I’ve watched Luka since he was 18 years old. I remember going to a practice and it was Dirk [Nowitzki] and Luka, and seeing his maturation and how great of a basketball player he’s become, it’s been fun to watch.”

Despite his sadness, Mahomes congratulated Doncic for having the opportunity to pursue his championship dreams with the Los Angeles Lakers. He added, “I’m happy for him that he’s going to be able to go out there and be in LA and get the chance to achieve his dream of winning a championship. He did so much, not only for the basketball team but for the city of Dallas, so I’ll always be appreciative of those years.”

In light of the trade, Mahomes also reminisced about his relationship with Doncic, stating that he has established a bond over the years while attending Mavericks games.

Mahomes highlighted the shocking nature of the trade, especially noting the Mavericks’ decision to part ways with a 25-year-old player who was instrumental during their run to the NBA Finals last year:

“But, obviously, the biggest reason why the deal was a stunner was that Dallas opted to part with a 25-year-old perennial MVP candidate just eight months after he led them to the NBA Finals.”

Furthermore, DeVonta Smith noted the absurdity of the trade by making a comparison to NFL trades. Smith stated, “I’d probably say, like, Justin Jefferson getting traded,” projecting that such transactions can indeed happen in sports.

As the trade’s implications unfold, Mahomes remains optimistic about the Mavericks’ future and their new roster adjustments.
