Filipa Patao Appointed as Head Coach of Boston Legacy Ahead of 2026 NWSL Season

Boston Legacy FC names Filipa Patao, formerly of Benfica, as their first head coach as they prepare to join the NWSL.

Boston Legacy FC has officially announced Filipa Patao as their inaugural head coach. This expansion team, set to compete in the NWSL in 2026 as the 15th franchise, awaits the necessary visa approvals for Patao, who is expected to step into her role in July, immediately working to shape the roster for the upcoming season.

Patao, the former head coach of the women’s senior team at Benfica, boasts an impressive record of 156 wins, 28 losses, and 15 draws. She holds a UEFA A coaching license and is currently pursuing a UEFA Pro diploma.

“I’m very excited about going to Boston. I can’t wait to get to the city, meet all the people and start working,” Patao expressed in a club statement.

“The American league is extremely competitive, which is a major reason I accepted this project. I thrive on competitive challenges and am dedicated to pushing players to improve. The passion of Boston fans for their teams excites me, and I’m eager to embark on this journey with them.”

Patao began her coaching career with Benfica in 2007, initially taking on youth coaching roles across various age groups. Under her leadership, Benfica secured numerous titles, including five consecutive Campeonato Nacional trophies, and made significant strides in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, reaching the quarterfinals last season. This performance contributed to her nomination for the inaugural Women’s Coach of the Year award at the Ballon d’Or.

“Filipa embodies all the values this club stands for—passion, determination, and style,” stated Jennifer Epstein, the controlling owner of Legacy FC. “Her dedication to player development and her competitive nature are evident, and we’re thrilled to have her lead us into our inaugural 2026 season.”

The Boston Legacy was announced as an expansion team in September 2023, marking women’s professional soccer’s return to New England. Although the team faced challenges, including a prior failed marketing campaign and a name change, they are committed to moving forward with local support.

Domè Guasch, a coach appointed in 2024, noted:

“Boston seeks to develop both a technical identity and a clear style of play. We need a coach who focuses not just on winning but on fostering growth and learning among players. I believe Filipa will help cultivate that culture.”

Boston now looks forward to signing its first player as it prepares for the upcoming expansion season.
