A'ja Wilson Sets WNBA Milestone with 5,000 Points: Aiming for the All-Time Scoring Record
A'ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces has made history as the fastest player to reach 5,000 points in the WNBA, positioning her to challenge for the all-time scoring title.
A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces made history as the fastest player in WNBA history to accumulate 5,000 career points, achieving this milestone by scoring 22 points during a recent match against the Connecticut Sun. In just 238 games, she surpassed Breanna Stewart who completed this feat in 242 games, making her the 28th player in the league’s history to cross this mark.
Wilson’s milestone came from a layup scored mid-way through the second quarter of an impressive 85-59 victory. Her complete performance included 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals, and 3 blocks, showcasing her all-around skills.
“It meant a lot to me,” Wilson shared in her postgame media availability. “It’s been a special, special season for us. It’s been a lot of ups and downs, but when you can hit a milestone like this in a league like this, I can’t let it go unnoticed. I’m grateful. I’m blessed. … I’m definitely going to cherish this moment because it’s been a lot of fun.”
This incredible achievement places Wilson on track to potentially challenge Diana Taurasi for the all-time scoring record. Should she maintain her current performance, she could need an additional 267 games (over six more seasons) to secure the top spot, which would make her 34 years old, significantly younger than Taurasi at her retirement.
