The Fallout of the Big Ten and SEC Alliance: Implications for Future College Football Playoff Structure

The Big Ten and SEC partnership was promising but has recently encountered significant hurdles, raising questions about the College Football Playoff's direction.

The Big Ten is advocating for a clear vision of the future of college athletics, aiming to reform the College Football Playoff (CFP) structure. Their recent collaboration with the SEC, however, has hit a snag, following the SEC’s unexpected decision to rethink the proposed playoff format. Initially aligned on a visionary 16-team playoff with four automatic qualifiers for the largest conferences, both parties appeared in agreement until the SEC expressed different priorities at their spring meetings.

“Disappointed,” a Big Ten athletics director shared with CBS Sports. “But not shocked.”

This change in narrative emerged after SEC coaches leaned towards a different playoff structure involving at-large spots, which also attracted support from the ACC and Big 12. Consequently, the Big Ten’s preference lost traction amid a reset in the ongoing discussions about the CFP’s direction. The SEC commissioner, Greg Sankey, remains neutral but has shown a preference to reduce automatic qualifiers in favor of a more inclusive approach.

Sankey made his position clear in a recent interview:

“I’d give no allocations. This whole 5-7 system should instead focus on the 12 best teams.”

As the conversations continue, several key decision-makers, including commissioners from the involved conferences, must establish a consensus as the stakes are high, not just for the playoff structure but for the future dynamics of NCAA college football. Ultimately, the outcomes from their engagements will shape the sport for years to come, as the CFP must finalize its structure by December 1.
