Vikings’ J.J. McCarthy Seeks Equitable Chance at Starting Quarterback Spot Amidst Uncertainty Around Sam Darnold

J.J. McCarthy, the Minnesota Vikings quarterback, expresses his desire for a fair opportunity to compete for the starting role, given the uncertain future of Sam Darnold.

The Minnesota Vikings drafted quarterback J.J. McCarthy from Michigan at No. 10 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, but his rookie year was cut short due to a knee injury sustained during preseason. Sam Darnold, in his first year with the team, took over and unexpectedly thrived, finishing the regular season with 4,319 passing yards, 35 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. However, Darnold struggled towards the end of the season, particularly in a Week 18 loss to the Detroit Lions and during the Wild Card game against the Los Angeles Rams, putting his future with the team in doubt.

Darnold’s contract situation remains uncertain as he enters free agency, leaving the door open for McCarthy. “All I could ask for is a fair opportunity,” said McCarthy, expressing his hope to compete for the starting position. Both Darnold’s and McCarthy’s futures are intertwined as the Vikings head into offseason decisions.
