Jon Scheyer Reflects on His Life-Changing Introduction to Cooper Flagg

Duke's Jon Scheyer recalls the pivotal moment when Brian Scalabrine introduced him to Cooper Flagg, a superstar prospect whose recruitment marked a significant achievement for Duke basketball ahead of the upcoming season.

Duke’s coach Jon Scheyer expressed that he will always remember the day Brian Scalabrine introduced him to Cooper Flagg, who is set to be the first overall pick in the upcoming NBA Draft. Identifying Flagg, a star player from Maine, and bringing him to Duke helped shape Scheyer’s early career success, culminating in a deep tournament run. This journey initiated with a crucial text from Scalabrine, stating, ‘He gave me the most important text of my life.’ Scalabrine, having noted Flagg’s talent, recommended him to Scheyer, who after seeing Flagg play realized the immense potential he possessed.

Before 2022, Flagg had received offers primarily from smaller schools, but come spring, he became a sought-after recruit, leading to Duke’s offer. By October 2023, Flagg committed to Duke, arriving as the consensus top player in his recruiting class. He had an impressive freshman season, leading the Blue Devils, winning multiple Player of the Year accolades, and averaging 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 4.2 assists.

Now, as Flagg prepares for the NBA after being selected first overall by the Mavericks, Scheyer reflects on the significant role he played in this remarkable journey.
