Inky Son Resigns from WNBA's Portland Expansion Team Ahead of Name Reveal

Inky Son's sudden departure comes just weeks before the expected announcement of the new team's name.

The Portland expansion franchise of the WNBA faces leadership changes just weeks away from unveiling its team name. Inky Son has resigned as the team president, only three months after her appointment, ahead of the team’s inaugural season set for 2026.

RAJ Sports, which owns the franchise and is helmed by Lisa Bhathal Merage and Alex Bhathal, confirmed Son’s departure in a statement:

“Portland’s WNBA expansion franchise announced today that Inky Son, Team President of Business Operations, has decided to leave the organization.”

During her short but meaningful time, Son played a crucial role in establishing the franchise’s strategy and community outreach.

After her exit, Clare Hamill, a former executive with Nike, will take over as the interim president. Although the reasons behind Son’s resignation remain unclear, reports suggest operational challenges have plagued the franchise following its 2024 announcement. Remarkably, a brand identity is still pending, and a general manager has yet to be appointed.

Earlier this month, it was reported that the WNBA had filed several trademark applications for the name “Portland Fire.” Following that, a mysterious social media hint suggested an announcement regarding the franchise’s identity would come on July 15. Despite the turmoil, the team has received 10,000 season ticket deposits from eager fans eagerly anticipating the start of play.
