Malik Beasley's Financial Troubles Linked to Gambling Investigation
Malik Beasley faces serious allegations regarding gambling as federal authorities investigate his financial issues.
Detroit Pistons shooting guard Malik Beasley was recently ranked as CBS Sports’ No. 14 available player ahead of the free agency period, but reports suggest he may be in serious trouble.
According to ESPN, federal authorities are investigating Beasley for allegations related to gambling during the 2023-24 season, particularly involving a potential betting scheme on NBA games while he was with the Milwaukee Bucks. Talks for a three-year, $42 million contract with the Pistons ceased amid the investigation, leading the team to instead agree to a deal with Duncan Robinson for $48 million.
In April, ESPN discovered a lawsuit brought by Beasley’s former marketing agency, Hazan Sports Management Group, claiming they are owed $2.5 million due to Beasley not repaying a $650,000 advance. An attorney for Hazan Sports noted that the agency ‘had to take a risk on a player with known financial issues.’
Beasley’s attorney, Steve Haney, stated that “An investigation is not a charge,” emphasizing his client’s presumption of innocence.
Recently, unusual betting activity on Beasley prop bets was detected by a sportsbook, raising red flags. This follows multiple legal troubles concerning unpaid debts to various creditors, adding to his financial challenges. Beasley had a previous lender, South River Capital, win a $5.8 million judgment against him in Maryland due to unpaid debts and is currently entangled in disputes over unpaid rent and several lawsuits related to financial obligations.
