One of the leading free agents in the NBA, Malik Beasley, is currently facing legal troubles along with federal scrutiny concerning gambling activities. Recently, Hazan Sports Management Group, based in New York, has filed a lawsuit against Beasley for allegedly violating a marketing contract just before the playoffs began. This lawsuit was reported first by ESPN and follows Beasley’s decision to part ways with the agency after they secured him a one-year $6 million contract with the Detroit Pistons last summer.
Hazan Sports is seeking $1 million in damages in addition to a $650,000 advance and associated commissions and expenses. As of June 11, both parties are reportedly in discussions to settle.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York is investigating Beasley in relation to allegations of gambling linked to league games. Beasley’s representative, Steve Haney, has stated that he is not involved in the lawsuit and emphasized that many clients investigated federally have never faced charges, urging the public to reserve judgment.
This investigation follows the NBA’s ban of Jontay Porter for related gambling issues. Porter was implicated in an investigation into prop bets, which can involve players being able to influence their own performances for betting purposes.
In the previous season, Beasley broke a franchise record with 319 three-pointers and contributed to the Pistons reaching the playoffs after a lengthy absence. He averaged 16.3 points per game last season and has had a solid career average of 11.7 points over several teams, including the Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Timberwolves.
