New One-Time Transfer Portal Window Approved by NCAA but Little Action Expected

A brief overview of the NCAA's new transfer portal window for eligible players, detailing the anticipated lack of significant player movement.

Two months after the last spring transfer portal window, a new one is set to open for college football players. This portal will be open from July 7 until August 5, thanks to a waiver issued by the NCAA Committee on Legislative Relief. However, expectations for significant player movement are low.

According to a general manager from the Power Four, this window is expected to result in minimal impact: “It’s essentially a big nothing-burger.” Other officials from major football programs share similar views.

Teams must identify players as “designated student-athlete” to allow them into the portal, which usually applies to those not counted against the 105-player limit. Therefore, it is anticipated that most entries during this period will be walk-ons or less notable scholarship players.

General sentiments suggest that major names will not utilize this new window for transfers, with one athletic official pointing out, “These are kids that we essentially don’t find good enough.”

Additionally, schools have a deadline of July 6 to designate eligible students, and the lack of expected players to trigger those designations points towards little drama for this portal window.
