Shortly after the Steelers officially signed Aaron Rodgers, Pittsburgh punter Corliss Waitman willingly gave up the No. 8 to his new teammate. It’s safe to say that recently-acquired cornerback Jalen Ramsey is hoping the Steelers’ other punter is just as accommodating.
A day after news broke about his trade to the Steelers, Ramsey posted a picture on X showcasing his name on a Steelers No. 5 jersey. His desire to wear No. 5 isn’t shocking, given that he changed from No. 20 to No. 5 in 2021 after the NFL changed uniform number policies, allowing defensive backs to wear single-digit numbers.
Unfortunately for Ramsey, punter Cameron Johnston already sports the No. 5 as he seeks to reclaim his position after a season-ending injury last year. Despite suffering an ACL tear, Johnston has shown remarkable recovery, fully participating during team workouts.
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin recently praised Johnston’s determination throughout his rehabilitation process, emphasizing his professionalism and engagement.
Regardless of the number, Ramsey is set to make a notable entrance on July 24, which marks the start of training camp, coinciding with Aaron Rodgers and former Dolphins teammate Jonnu Smith’s first practice as Steelers.
