Frank Vogel Joins Mavericks as Top Assistant to Jason Kidd
Former Lakers and Suns coach Frank Vogel is set to become the lead assistant for the Dallas Mavericks, reuniting with Jason Kidd, with whom he won an NBA championship in 2020.
The Dallas Mavericks are enhancing their coaching staff for the upcoming 2025-26 season. Alongside a contract extension for head coach Jason Kidd, Frank Vogel is expected to join as the lead assistant coach. This move, first reported by Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, marks Vogel’s first assistant role since 2011, after he replaces Sean Sweeney, who joined the San Antonio Spurs.
With Vogel’s return to Dallas, he reunites with Kidd, having previously won the 2020 NBA championship as head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. This championship came during the NBA bubble amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, they’ll switch their functions from that championship Lakers team, with Kidd as the head coach and Vogel as the assistant.
Initially brought on as a consultant last October, Vogel’s last coaching role was with the Phoenix Suns during the 2023-24 season. The Suns had a disappointing first-round playoff exit, resulting in Vogel’s dismissal after just one season, despite the team forming a star trio with Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal.
Vogel, who has a history of success as a head coach, with tenures at the Lakers, Orlando Magic, and Indiana Pacers, last served as an assistant during the 2010-11 season with the Pacers. In addition to his championship title, Vogel coached two All-Star teams in 2014 and 2020. He boasts an overall head coaching record of 488-422.
