Sophie Cunningham Responds to Criticism Over WNBA Expansion Comments
After expressing her views on the cities of Detroit and Cleveland, Cunningham clarifies her statements regarding WNBA expansion.
Sophie Cunningham became a trending topic this week after the WNBA announced its newest expansion franchises in Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia. The Indiana Fever guard shared her thoughts on the expansion cities, questioning whether players would prefer them over other cities that bid like Miami, Kansas City, and Nashville.
Her comments sparked backlash, as fans of Cleveland and Detroit pointed out the significance of these cities in WNBA history. Many criticized her statement, highlighting what they perceived as hypocrisy from a player based in Indianapolis.
Cunningham addressed reporters again and clarified her intentions, stating her remarks were not meant to insult the fans in those cities. Instead, she expressed a desire for more unique destinations and teams outside traditional NBA markets.
“First of all, I know the history behind the WNBA. I know both of those cities had teams before and they got us where we’re at, so I’m thankful for that,” said Cunningham. “What I meant to convey is that I find the lifestyle in cities like Miami intriguing. I appreciate what Cleveland and Detroit have done for our sport, but I believe there are benefits to exploring markets outside the established NBA venues.”
She added that her remarks were misinterpreted, emphasizing that she would not demean hardworking individuals from those cities, acknowledging her own roots in Missouri.
Cunningham’s initial comments provoked a strong reaction, highlighting the importance of navigating expansion discussions thoughtfully as the WNBA looks to grow in new locations.
