Luka Doncic’s Anticipated Debut with the Lakers
Luka Doncic could soon make his debut with the Los Angeles Lakers, as confirmed by coach JJ Redick on Wednesday.
Doncic joined the Lakers in a surprising trade from the Dallas Mavericks last weekend, after recovering from a calf strain sustained on Christmas Day. He practiced with the Lakers for the first time on Wednesday.
Although Doncic will not participate in the Lakers’ opening game of their three-game homestand against the Golden State Warriors on Thursday, he may return for the game against the Indiana Pacers on Saturday or the Utah Jazz on Monday.
“We are assessing his status day by day. We are optimistic he can return in the upcoming games. Today’s practice was non-contact, but he was able to put in good work for about 45 minutes,” Redick mentioned. “He will have more chances to engage in live basketball over the next couple of days, after which we will determine his status for Saturday.”
The NBA broadcasters were quick to notice: shortly after Redick’s comments, ESPN announced they would air the Pacers-Lakers game on Saturday, replacing the scheduled Jazz-Suns game.
Doncic watched from the sidelines as LeBron James led the Lakers to a solid victory against the Clippers on Tuesday, marking their ninth win in eleven games.
What it would take for the Mavericks to win the Luka Dončić trade?
James, still adapting to the trade of his close friend and former teammate Anthony Davis, expressed excitement about teaming up with Doncic, whom he regards as his favorite player.
Doncic engaged in a full practice, completing some drills with Redick, James, and assistant coach Scott Brooks. He also reconnected with Finney-Smith, his former teammate from Dallas, now also part of the Lakers after a trade with the Brooklyn Nets.
Finney-Smith commented, “I’m happy he’s on my side now. I know he’s eager to play, especially after being sidelined for a bit.”
As Doncic’s return approaches, discussions will follow regarding his performance expectations and integration with the team. As Redick observed, “The biggest learning curve is just the language, but Luka is a high-level basketball player who understands the game for what it is.”
