Tributes have poured in for Liverpool attacker Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, as both tragically passed away in a car crash in Spain early Thursday morning. The accident occurred on the A52 near Cernadilla, Zamora, when their vehicle suffered a blown tire while attempting to overtake another car, leading to a fatal crash.
Jota was celebrated for his accomplishments with Portugal, where he made 49 appearances and netted 14 goals, and he recently won a Premier League title with Liverpool. He had married his long-time partner Rute Cardoso last month, leaving behind three children. Jota’s brother, Andre, was a professional player for Penafiel in the Portuguese second division.
In grieving tribute, Pedro Proenca, president of the Portuguese Football Federation, shared, “The Portuguese Football Federation and the entire Portuguese football community are devastated by the deaths of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva. Beyond being exceptional players, they were extraordinary people respected by teammates and rivals alike.”
Cristiano Ronaldo expressed his sorrow via social media, stating, “It doesn’t make sense. Just now we were together in the national team… Rest in Peace, Diogo and Andre. We will all miss you.”
In solidarity, matches on Thursday and Friday at the Women’s European Championships will observe a minute of silence in memory of Jota and Silva.
Liverpool FC released a statement reflecting their heartbreak: “Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota. The club requests the privacy of both families as they navigate this unimaginable loss. We will ensure they have our full support.”
