Damian Lillard's Free Agency: All-Star Eyes Summer Signing Under Conditions
Following his release from the Bucks, Damian Lillard is a free agent contemplating potential team offers this summer.
After being released by the Milwaukee Bucks, Damian Lillard now finds himself as an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his career. Though not the scenario he envisioned, as the Bucks unexpectedly let him go, this also allows Lillard to choose any team he’d like to join.
As the soon-to-be 35-year-old recovers from a torn ACL sustained during the playoffs, he has the flexibility to take his time, possibly waiting until next summer to make a decision. However, Chris Haynes reports that the nine-time All-Star might consider signing with a team this summer “under the right terms and conditions.”
Lillard has attracted attention from several teams, notably the Golden State Warriors, Boston Celtics, and Los Angeles Lakers. However, it remains unclear how motivated these teams are to finalize a deal, especially since they are not actively seeking a starting point guard at this time. Despite Lillard’s absence for much or all of the upcoming season, if he does rejoin, he might prefer to start rather than come off the bench.
Originally, Lillard had hoped to join the Miami Heat, but with Jimmy Butler no longer part of the roster and the Heat’s declining title chances, this pairing looks increasingly unlikely.
Lillard could also opt to take the next season off to fully recuperate from his injury, rejoining a title contender the following summer. Regardless of his next move, Lillard’s next opportunity may include considerable salary reductions, as he’ll earn approximately $22.5 million per season for the next five years with the Bucks following their decision to stretch his contract for the acquisition of Myles Turner.
