WNBA Aims to Extend Season Into November Amid Expansion Efforts

The WNBA is looking forward to a historic expansion with new teams joining the league, prompting discussions about adjusting the current season schedule.

The WNBA has announced plans to bring three new cities—Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia—into the fold as part of its expansion strategy. Commissioner Cathy Engelbert highlighted the significance of this growth during the announcement:

“This historic expansion is a powerful reflection of our league’s extraordinary momentum, the depth of talent across the game, and the surging demand for investment in women’s professional basketball.”

However, this expansion raises questions about the scheduling of the WNBA season.

In a recent conversation, Terrika Foster-Brasby, a CBS Sports basketball analyst, disclosed that the league might extend its season into November to accommodate international play, noting:

“I even heard from the commissioner that the season may be extending well into the coming years due to breaks needed for international commitments.”

Currently, the WNBA season runs from May through October. Engelbert reiterated the aim to maintain a consistent schedule amidst these changes:

“Every year is different, but we want a consistent start and a relatively consistent ending… next year we may push it a little into November.”

As the landscape of women’s basketball evolves, the WNBA is positioned to adapt, ensuring engagement from its fanbase even in competition with other sports.
