Shohei Ohtani, the Dodgers’ two-way star, is continuing his journey back to form as a pitcher on the field. His latest appearance on Saturday night at Dodger Stadium saw him pitch two innings against the Houston Astros, achieving his highest pitch count of the season.
Ohtani threw a total of 31 pitches, with 21 of those strikes, striking out three batters and walking none. He allowed a single to lead off but quickly secured a double play, limiting the Astros to just six batters in his two innings.
His fastball consistently clocked in the 98-100 mph range, and he showcased exceptional off-speed pitches, particularly an effective breaking sweeper.
It’s important to note that Ohtani is on the mend from significant elbow surgery completed back in September 2023. Unlike most pitchers in his situation who would be on a minor-league rehab assignment, Ohtani has managed to balance his rehabilitation with his duties at bat, where he continues to deliver MVP-caliber performances.
This matchup marks Ohtani’s fourth start since returning, and he has already thrown six innings, boasting a 1.50 ERA with 0.83 WHIP, complemented by six strikeouts against just one walk. A notable talent, Ohtani last pitched in a regular capacity in 2023, where he recorded a 10-5 record along with a 3.14 ERA over 132 innings with the Angels.
