Mexico’s Raul Jimenez honored Diogo Jota during the Concacaf Gold Cup final by replicating his late teammate’s signature celebration after scoring a goal.
Jimenez scored the equalizer in the 27th minute, just after the U.S. took the lead. Following the goal, he paid homage to Jota, who tragically passed away in a car accident, by revealing a jersey with Jota’s name. He also mimicked playing a video game, reminiscent of Jota’s hobbies.
Jimenez shared his thoughts on Jota, reflecting on their time as teammates at Wolverhampton Wanderers from 2018 to 2019: “He was a great teammate… It’s very tough to learn this type of news about someone so close to you and who was a great friend.”
In tribute to Jota’s legacy, many soccer players globally celebrated similarly after scoring, including notable figures like Kylian Mbappe.
