On paper, Asante Samuel Jr. appears to be an ideal fit for the Miami Dolphins, especially after their trade of starting cornerback Jalen Ramsey. However, this possibility seems to falter due to comments from his father, former NFL cornerback Asante Samuel Sr.
In a recent podcast episode titled “Say What Needs To Be Said,” the two-time Super Bowl champion criticized the Dolphins’ management following Ramsey’s trade. Samuel Sr. called head coach Mike McDaniel a “pushover” and declared general manager Chris Grier to have “no backbone.”
“The Dolphins had no reason to trade Jalen Ramsey… There’s no leadership in the Dolphins organization. Mike McDaniel is a pushover. Chris Grier, he has no backbone. They’re running this team like a Little League team.” Translation: “Dolphins had no reason to trade Jalen Ramsey… There’s no leadership in the Dolphins organization. Mike McDaniel is a pushover. Chris Grier, he has no backbone. They’re running this team like a Little League team.”
Samuel Sr.’s remarks raise substantial doubts about the Dolphins’ interest in Samuel Jr. even though he has the potential to perform well based on his last healthy season. If family opinions influence decisions at the organization, Samuel Jr. might find opportunities elsewhere.
Other Potential Teams for Samuel Jr.
- Arizona Cardinals: With significant salary cap space, they could provide the depth needed in their young secondary.
- Minnesota Vikings: After ranking fourth last season in passing yards allowed, they might be looking for experienced corners to bolster their lineup.
- Las Vegas Raiders: Under new management, the Raiders have potential needs in the secondary that Samuel Jr. could satisfy.
