Lionel Messi’s future remains uncertain as discussions about his career options unfold. The Argentine superstar’s contract with Inter Miami is set to expire in December, and he is weighing his possibilities, including a contract extension with the Major League Soccer (MLS) team. The upcoming season might also be pivotal as Messi approaches what could be his final World Cup.
After leading Argentina to victory in the thrilling 2022 Qatar World Cup final against France, Messi is preparing for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
At Inter Miami, Messi has made a significant impact, scoring 31 goals and providing 22 assists across 38 regular-season matches, and earning the 2024 league MVP title. Furthermore, he added seven goals and two assists in nine Concacaf Champions Cup games.
Current Status of Inter Miami Contract
Inter Miami is actively pursuing a contract extension with Messi, who made a monumental move to the MLS team in the summer of 2023. Since then, he has transformed not only the franchise but also the entire league, clinching the inaugural 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2024 Supporters’ Shield.
Messi signed a two-and-a-half-year designated player contract, which runs until the end of the 2025 MLS season. According to various sources, discussions are ongoing to extend this partnership, with the league keen on having Messi inaugurate their new stadium, Miami Freedom Park, set to open before the next World Cup.
In addition to Messi, Inter Miami has been in discussions with midfielder Rodrigo De Paul regarding a potential deal.
Interest from Saudi Arabian League
With uncertainties surrounding Messi’s tenure in the United States, opportunities from the Saudi Pro League have also surfaced. Reports suggest the league is keen on attracting Messi, aiming to secure both him and Cristiano Ronaldo within the same league, should he choose to leave MLS.
Possible Return to Barcelona?
The idea of Messi returning to Barcelona is perpetually in discussion, although no formal negotiations seem to be underway. Following his exit from the club in the summer of 2021 due to financial constraints, many fans would relish another opportunity to see him don the Barcelona colors. If the club fails to acquire other transfer targets, Messi may emerge as a possibility for a final chapter at his beloved former club.
