DeWanna Bonner Likely to Join Phoenix Mercury After Turbulent Exit from Indiana Fever

DeWanna Bonner, a veteran WNBA star and six-time All-Star, is poised to sign with the Phoenix Mercury following her recent release from the Indiana Fever. This move is part of her transition after a challenging time with the Fever.

Six-time WNBA All-Star DeWanna Bonner is anticipated to join the Phoenix Mercury, as reported by ESPN’s Michael Voepel and Josh Weinfuss. This development follows her release from the Indiana Fever last month at her request after 16 years in the WNBA.

An official agreement with the Mercury is expected in the near future. Bonner, who enjoyed her first 10 seasons in Phoenix and won two WNBA championships, entered the market on June 25 when the Fever let her go. Although Bonner had to miss the final weeks of her time with the Fever for personal reasons and considered retiring during her absence, she is now set to continue her career at 37, becoming the second-oldest active player in the league after Seattle’s Alysha Clark.

Bonner expressed gratitude to the Fever organization in a statement after her departure, mentioning the opportunity she had with them despite the misalignment. She highlighted her desire for the team to find success as they develop their young players.

Bonner, known for her expertise, holds the record with 87 playoff appearances—an asset for a Mercury team that is currently tied for second-best in the league with a 12-6 record. Her previous performance with the Fever saw her average only 7.1 points per game, resulting in a demotion from the starting lineup early in the season. The specifics of her contract with the Mercury are still unknown, but she was earning nearly the maximum salary while in Indiana.
