Spanish authorities reported on Tuesday that they believe Liverpool striker Diogo Jota was speeding at the time of a highway accident that resulted in the deaths of both him and his brother, Andre Silva.
While Spain’s Civil Guard continues its investigation into the incident, they assert that Jota was behind the wheel when the crash occurred.
Jota, a prominent player for Liverpool and the Portuguese national team, was driving a Lamborghini with his brother when a tire blew, causing the vehicle to veer off the highway and crash, igniting in flames. According to the Associated Press, Jota was reportedly headed to Santander to catch a ferry to England, needing to rejoin Liverpool after being advised against flying due to a recent lung procedure.
The findings from Spanish authorities surfaced shortly after funeral services were held for Jota and Silva in Portugal, attended by Jota’s teammates from Liverpool and Portugal’s national squad. Jota is survived by his wife and their three children, and his passing occurred just weeks after he married during Liverpool’s offseason.
