San Antonio Spurs Acquire Kelly Olynyk in Exchange with Wizards
The Spurs bolster their roster by trading for versatile big man Kelly Olynyk, involving promising players and a draft pick.
The San Antonio Spurs have made a significant addition to their roster by trading for Kelly Olynyk from the Washington Wizards. In this deal, the Spurs have given away Malaki Branham, Blake Wesley, and a second-round pick for the year 2026, according to Shams Charania from ESPN.
Olynyk, 34, had recently been with the Wizards for a short stint, just under two weeks, after being traded from the New Orleans Pelicans as part of a swap involving CJ McCollum and Jordan Poole at the end of June. Last season, he played for both the Toronto Raptors and Pelicans, where he averaged 8.7 points per game while achieving a career-high 41.8% shooting from three-point range.
This acquisition marks the second time the Spurs have strengthened their frontcourt this offseason, following the signing of Luke Kornet from the Boston Celtics. Kornet, standing at 7-foot-2, offers a contrasting skill set to Olynyk, who is better suited as a versatile stretch big man. Together, they enhance the Spurs’ options around star center Victor Wembanyama.
The Wizards are focusing on accumulating young talent, acquiring Branham, who was the 20th overall pick in 2022 but struggled for playing time with the Spurs last season. Wesley, selected shortly after Branham, also had limited contributions for the Spurs. This trade is part of the Wizards’ strategy as they now possess eleven former first-round picks from recent drafts.
